Concept art from the Forge
MARCUS HALE-4 MIN READ
Every Emberfall season starts in the same place: a stack of cheap sketchbooks. For the Eternal Forge we filled eleven of them — here is how a few pencil lines became the season's siege engines, armour sets and the Forge itself.
The rule of the thumbnail
No concept survives first contact with the game unless it reads at thumbnail size. Our artists draw each idea at two centimetres tall first; if the silhouette does not tell you what it is — engine, armour, beast — it goes back in the book.
From grey box to ember glow
Once a silhouette earns its keep, it graduates to colour studies and then straight into a grey-box game level. The Forge's now-signature ember glow was an accident — a placeholder light left on overnight that the whole team fell in love with by morning standup.
“Keep the sketch on your desk until launch. It reminds you what excited you before the deadlines did.” — Marcus H., art lead
The full art book — 140 pages of sketches, studies and abandoned ideas — ships with the season's collector's edition. Some of our favourite failures are in there too.
